For she said, If I may touch but his clothes, I shall be whole.

And straightway the fountain of her blood was dried up; and she felt in her body that she was healed of that plague.

Mark 5:28-29

Talking To God

God, in my storms and darkness, I long for a place of safety and security. This is only found in You. I run to You. Every time I try to turn back and live in unsafe places in my mind, help me run to You again.

Building trust, piece by piece

Nothing makes us feel quite so vulnerable as placing our heart and soul in the hands of another. Yet this is the level of trust and honesty we long for with our dearest friends, and hope they find with us. For to have a friend is to be a friend; it's impossible to separate one from the other.

And how is this kind of trust achieved? How do we know if our friends are truly trustworthy? How do we know if we are?

Trust is knowing that you can be transparently honest with your friend. It's the assurance that your deepest secrets, your strongest desires, your biggest dreams, even your worst mistakes are safe in the hands of another. It's believing that your friend will not betray your confidence. It's knowing he or she has your best interests at heart. But a foundation of trust is built slowly, one piece at a time. For only as we become convinced that one portion of our life is safe with a friend can we hand over another. In other words, we don't usually dump everything about ourselves onto a brand-new friend. We take it slowly and carefully---wisely revealing only what seems appropriate---until our confidence in our friend increases along with his or her confidence in us . After a while, we know without a doubt that the foundation  of trust is strong and firm. We don't even question it anymore. Instead, we find that a truly good friend can even discern when we're not being totally honest---with him or her or with ourselves.
